Who we are...
| Grateful Greyhounds, Inc., is a
non-profit volunteer-run organization helping to rescue greyhounds, rehabilitate
and place them into loving homes. We raise awareness of the plight of the racing greyhound,
and participate in various community outreach programs. GG serves
NYC, Long Island, Westchester/Rockland Counties, and some parts on New
Jersey. |
 |
Every dog GG rescues is carefully
screened to determine its personality and best possible living
arrangements. The dog is then fostered with professional greyhound
people to help it acclimate to living with humans as well as other
animals. All prospective owners are also screened so that the best
possible match could be achieved. Please, read below to find out more... |

How it all began...
| It was the winter of 1993 when I (Lisa
Sallie) adopted my very first greyhound. I had just purchased my home
and thought that my home NEEDED a dog. I always loved animals, dogs
especially, but had been bothered by allergies when I became an adult.
I began searching for a breed that would be "allergy friendly". I
came across the greyhound purely accidentally. I had been watching TV
and while scanning the channels I came across a show highlighting the
wonderful breed of dog known as the ex-racing greyhound. I was hooked.
They were big, sleek, laid back and friendly...but most importantly,
they were proven OK for folks with allergies. |
 |
I founded Grateful Greyhounds, Inc. in
July of 1998. GG places 100 - 120 greyhounds into responsible homes
every year. Check us out, if this is the breed for you then fill out

Why GG?
You may ask, why adopt from GG? Here are
just a few very important reasons that make Grateful Greyhounds the
best choice:
*each dog is individually screened and evaluated by a Grateful
Greyhounds representative;
*we cat-test every dog with a live cat to determine potential problems
with cats and other small animals;
*many of our dogs are in our foster program before going into an
adoptive home to make the transition process easier on them and their
new adoptive family.
Want to know more about what sets us apart from the rest? GG has
developed a series of adoption steps that assure the most successful
placement, steps that resulted in many success
stories.
Prior to adoption:
-We will talk to you to help you determine whether the greyhound is the right
breed for you. Our veteran greyhound people can answer any questions about the
breed's behavior, temperament, care, etc.
-GG will also conduct a home visit. This will help evaluate your
home and set it up for your new addition. The home visit is also a very
important tool for GG when making a recommendation for a particular
greyhound for you to consider. |
 |
The adoption:
We deliver! That's right, there is no need for you to leave
your house to pick up your new greyhound -- we will deliver it to your
home. This is especially important when you have small dogs, cats, or
children in your home. The GG adoption rep will educate you on the
proper way to make introductions.
-Want to have a say in what age, gender, color greyhound you
adopt? No problem! We understand that although you are rescuing a
dog, you may have a preference for a particular color, or maybe you
are more comfortable with a certain gender or maybe you prefer to have
a more mature dog or a much younger dog. We will help you navigate
through the adoption process. While a GG rep may recommend a specific
animal to you, the ultimate decision is still up to you.
-Our adoption donation ($250) includes spay/neuter, test and treatment
for parasites, and more.
After the adoption:
-On-going support. We are available to answer all questions about your
new companion, help you train it, and work through any problems that
may develop. Our network of dedicated greyhound veterans are glad to
offer helpful advice. If it should happen that things don't work out,
we will always take back the dog you adopted |
