| Please consider the following BEFORE you Adopt! |
A WORD TO FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN UNDER 8 YRS OF AGE
Because we understand how difficult it is to watch toddlers and small children under 8 yrs our policy is that generally we prefer adoptive families to check with us before applying because we prefer that children be at least 8 years of age. Greyhounds are very special and sweet natured dogs, but the fact remains they are still ANIMALS and from time to time can be unpredictable. If startled or hurt by a falling child or quick movement it is possible for them to become distressed and lash out. This is true of ANY breed. If you have younger children, please contact GG to discuss your specific situation. There have been times, after conducting a thorough homevisit with all family members, that we all feel comfortable moving forward with the adoption of a greyhound. But a conversation prior to the homevisit as well as a thorough homevisit need to take place
A Word to Cat Owners Who Wish to Adopt a Greyhound…
Families who own cats, and wish to adopt greyhounds, must understand that there are never any guarantees regarding the cat's future safety, regardless of how disinterested the greyhound seems to be. We cannot, and will not, promise that the greyhound will never chase or injure the cat. We do our best to determine the greyhound's level of interest, but several thousand years of genetic programming is hard to overcome, and you must understand that something as small as a bird flying by the window or a squirrel romping in your yard could be a trigger. The greyhound should always be supervised when interacting with small animals and should never be left alone or unsupervised with small animals. Taking 30 seconds to put kitty in a closed bedroom or crating your greyhound before leaving the room will help insure a safe, harmonious environment for everyone.
A word to families WITHOUT fences* who wish to adopt a Greyhound…
When adopting a Greyhound from Grateful Greyhounds, fencing is NOT mandatory, HOWEVER, potential adopters must thoroughly understand that in inclement weather, you will need to be willing and able to stay outside with your Greyhound LONG ENOUGH for the dog to do his/her business . You MUST walk the dog, as simply standing there will not stimulate the dog. Greyhounds are NOT afraid of snow, and they WILL do their business but you have to walk with them and be patient and stay outside with them long enough for them to evacuate their bowels. This can take anywhere from two (2) to thirty (30) minutes. It takes some time to establish a routine so patience is essential. Once the routine is established, things will go more quickly.
*GG will not complete an adoption with an electric fence

Name:
INSIRKLE
Sex: Male
Color: Blue Brindle
Age: 2 1/2 years
STATUS: ADOPTION PENDING
*SPECIAL NEEDS* |
|
| |
Insirkle is a beautiful blue brindle male hound born in October of 2007. He came to Grateful Greyhounds in May from florida. We were told he had a "bad belly", but the feeling was once he was on a good quality kibble, he would be fine. Unfortunately that was not the case. Insirkle was not doing well. He continued to lose weight and had really bad diarrhea. Stool samples were negative, blood tests were normal. His weight was so low, we started to think this guy was literally starving to death right in front of our eyes. As we kept ruling out things like parasites & cancer, we conducted some tests that showed us Insirkle has a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (Maldigestive Disorder). Basically his pancreas is not functioning, not creating necessary digestive enzymes, so his food is not being broken down into digestible form. He really was starving to death. There is good news...there is treatment for this condition. However, the treatment can be expensive. Insirkle will need to eat 3 times a day and take 2-3 pills (Viokase) prior to each meal. A bottle of 500 pills of Viokase can cost about $150 and will last about a month and a half. Basically, it will cost the adoptive family about $3 a day for the rest of his life. Insirkle will also need to visit the vet for check ups more regularly than most hounds. He is not cat safe but loves people and other, larger dogs.

STATUS: ADOPTED

Tux is a beautiful, gentle senior hound born in May of 2001. He is black with a nice white chest and a white face which makes him look elegant and wise. He has really had a tough go of it since his racing career ended. He has been in 3 adoptive homes, and 2 foster homes in the last 5 years. He was returned for reasons that had nothing to do with him, but everything to do with the economy. He is now in NY hoping for a fresh start and a new chance at a FOREVER home. He is gentle, gets along with everyone, totally ignores cats, enjoys big dogs, little dog, kids, adults, and even the steak you leave on the table (hey...he's no dummy!!). Seriously, this guy deserves a special home to call his own. We will be extra careful where he goes. He needs a permanent home and some consistency in his life.
